Digital Legacy Checklist

Use this as a calm weekend project. You do not need to finish everything at once. Start with the items that would create the most stress for your family if they had to guess.

Quick rule

Do not put raw passwords directly inside a will. Wills can become public records. Use a password manager or sealed instructions instead.

1. Accounts and access

List your primary email accounts and recovery emails. Add financial logins, banking apps, retirement accounts, and payment apps. List phone, laptop, tablet, and computer passcodes without exposing them casually. Decide where emergency access instructions will live.

2. Passwords and recovery

Choose a password manager or update the one you use. Turn on emergency access or family sharing where appropriate. Store backup codes for important accounts in a secure place. Note which accounts use authenticator apps, security keys, or SMS codes.

3. Photos and memories

Identify where your family photos are stored. Back up irreplaceable photos to at least two locations. Name the people who should receive access to family albums. Add context to important albums, scans, or family history files.

4. Documents

Locate will, trust, insurance, property, tax, and medical directive documents. Scan key documents and store them securely. Write down attorney, accountant, insurance agent, and financial advisor contact details. Tell your trusted person where originals are stored.

5. Subscriptions and bills

List recurring subscriptions, utilities, domains, hosting, and cloud storage plans. Note which services should be canceled, transferred, archived, or preserved. Add business tools, creator accounts, newsletters, and paid communities.

6. Final instructions

Choose a digital executor or trusted helper. Write plain instructions for social media, photos, files, and private notes. Review the plan every six months.
